Hole #1
Nice par 4 to start your day. All this shot requires is for the player to take aim just right of a small cluster of Trees on the left hand side of the fairway. This will then leave you a very easy 120 - 130 Meter shot to the green, short of the green is much better than going long. Very flat green, be mindful that the grain will run towards the ocean on your right
Hole #2
Take aim at the power pole in the distance, longer hitters maybe avoid hitting driver as the driving area becomes very narrow in the hitting zone. Once you have negotiated the drive, you will be left with a pretty straight forward approach. Bunker on the RH side comes into play, so avoid this where possible.
Hole #3
For bigger hitters this hole can quite easily be a very easy birdie chance, a drive left of the gum tree at the rise of the hill will allow you to take the chance of hitting it onto the green in 2. The option is also there to take a lay up and will leave you with a shot inside of 100 meters. Green is very approachable, by try to avoid missing the green long left & right as this can make for a difficult Up & Down
Hole #4
A Cluster of gums is directly in sight, a tees shot perfectly placed right of this will leave you about 120 meters to a bunker guarded green. Anything right of this green will give you an easy chip or pitch if you miss the green. Bigger hitters can chose o take on the cluster of trees and will leave y only a short pitch. This green is very sloped, so try to always be below the hole in your approach.
Hole #5
This is a very strong 200 meter par three, it is a pretty straight forward tee shot, but will usually demand a precise fairway wood or driver. Longer hitters can play a long iron, but is generally into the wind. The green once you get there is very quick in spots, if the flag is located on the front of the green always try to make sure you have an up hill put.
Hole #6
The smart play is to hit your tee shot to the left hand side of the fairway roughly 200 meters, this will then leave you with a pretty straight forward 120meter shot to the green. Be careful as the green can very be quicker from the front to back. He longer hitters can dare to take the green on from the tee shot, but will require a very strong left to right ball flight, a great deal of risk for not a great deal of reward.
Hole #7
The 2nd of the shorter par 5's, this hole requires a tee shot placed to the right hand side of the fairway, having Out Of bounds down the entire left hand side till also steer you towards the right hand side. Once your tee shot is negotiated it will allow you to then either have a crack at the green, or hit a lay up to about the 100 meter mark. Big hitters can chose a line down the left hand side of the fairway to carry the bunkers on the left hand side, this will then shorten the hole considerably, again a very good birdie chance if played well.
Hole #8
Short Par 3, guarded by a large bunker at the front of the green. The idea spot for this ball is in the middle of the green, if you do miss it, anything short or on the right hand side gives you a chance to make par. If you go long or left, it can make your par attempt very challenging. Again an uphill put will make life a lot easier, there are a number of very quick putts on this green.
Hole #9
The easiest hole on the golf course. A well hit tee shot will leave you a short approach into a two tiered. Be mindful of the hazard on the right hand side of the green, known as ‘Robbo's Dam'.
Hole #10
In the prevailing wind, this hole can play one of the hardest on the course. A well hit tee shot left of the gums located on the right hand side of the fairway will leave you roughly a wedge in your hands. The approach is to a very flat green with no trouble to speak of.
Hole #11
On the card plays as only 156 Meters, but can at times be one of the harder holes to negotiate. A well hit mid iron into this green will provide you with the greatest result. Anything short will give you a pretty easy up and down, anything long and you're in a little bit of trouble.
Hole #12
This hole is listed as the second hardest on the golf course. This hole plays almost dead straight. A driver off the tee and in the fairway will give you about a mid to low iron into the green. A few subtle breaks in green are evident, so keep yourself putting uphill and you're doing well.
Hole #13
This hole is open to many variances in the attack. You can go from ripping your driver up the left side over the bunkers to hitting a long iron up the left side, giving you the opportunity to hit the 90DEG corner. If you get your driver far enough up the fairway to can try to knock it on the green, but the safe play is to bite a small portion off the corner and approach the small green.
Hole #14
This is again a pretty straight forward golf hole. A well hit driver will leave you with a mid to short iron to the green. This green is very small in size, and it is very important to make sure that you hit it in the right sports. If your long on this green again it wil be a pretty tough up and down.
Hole #15
One of the stronger golf holes on the Portland Golf Course. You will see the water hazard on the left hand side of the fairway. A well hit driver or fairway wood will allow you to hit through the corner, and then completely opens up the green. This will then leave you roughly a mid iron or longer hitters may have a short iron in your hand. As with most of the greens, short is the place to miss, as anything long will cause some trouble. Be mindful of the bunker and water hazard on the left hand side of the green.
Hole #16
You can take aim at the cypress tree located on the left hand side of the fairway. A well hit driver to the right of this will allow the player to then play straight down the fairway, setting up their 3rd shot to the green. Longer hitters may dare to hit it over the cypress which will take off some distance of the hole, allowing the longer hitters to go for the green. Your approach is to a relatively flat green giving you a good chance at birdie or certain par.
Hole #17
Much the same as the 10th hole can usually be played in the prevailing wind, making this the 3rd toughest hole on the golf course. The cluster of gum trees on the left hand side of the fairway are about the usual driving distance. Bigger hitters can carry this, leaving them with a very small amount of distance to go. The general play would be to hit it right of the trees, in the line with the mound located on the right side of the fairway. This then leaves a long or mid iron to the green. Once again the green is pretty flat, and getting up and down should not cause too much trouble.
Hole #18
A very strong finishing hole, only plays around 176 metres, but is a very strong challenge. You can quite often have a long iron in your hands, aiming at trying to make the best swing possible. Anything on the green will be a bonus on this hole. A 3 is a good score on this hole and will help you finish of your enjoyable round of golf at the Portland Golf Club
